From a young age he worked as a stonecutter’s apprentice and then an assistant of a stonecutting workshop in Vicenza until he was thirty years old. This early experience with understanding how stone can be wielded and shaped played a major role in Palladio’s later career.
His life changed dramatically when he was employed by a poet and scholar called Gian Giorgio Trissino to help redesign and reconstruct the Villa Cricoli.

Trissino sparked an interest in the young Palladio to study the arts, sciences, literature and ancient Greek architecture. As his knowledge and skills grew dramatically he gained wider recognition and was subsequently awarded the job of being the ‘Prato della Serenissima’ which was the Venetian Republic chief architect.
He developed his own unique style which became known as the Palladian style that included revived Roman design principles he liked and re-adapted. He designed many elaborate palaces, villas and churches, especially in Venice and throughout the region of Veneto.

The city of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto include many of his architectural masterpieces and are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
