As the fame of Assisi’s beloved St. Francis grew large and more widespread, more and more elaborate plans were set in place to build basilicas, churches and chapels in his honour in the surrounding area. And St. Francis is not the only endeared saint to hail from here; St. Clare, St. Agnes and St. Sylvester also came from here and also have sacred buildings erected in their honour.

Begin your visit here with a walk around the magnificent basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi, decorated with ornate frescoes, sculptures and sacred paintings depicting the saint’s life. There are also two castles in Assisi; one is called Rocca Maggiore which was built by the order of Cardinal Albornoz in 1367.
Pope Pius II added a domineering cylindrical bastion in the early 1500s which served as a reminder of the Catholic Church’s power over such areas of Italy. An older smaller fortress in Assisi dates back to the Roman era, as does a scenic 1st century amphitheatre which now has a pretty garden in its centre.
