The city of Ascoli Piceno is a remarkable place in the region of Le Marche that lies at the meeting of two rivers and is almost completely surrounded by mountains.

There are superb holiday villas in Sant’Omero for tourists to relax in for a few days if they wish while they explore Ascoli Piceno, less than a half hour’s drive away.

Why not begin your day of exploration with a stroll around the historical centre of Ascoli Piceno. Most of the old buildings here were constructed from a beautiful gray marble called Travertine, mined from the nearby mountains. Be sure to see the glorious Piazza del Popolo which is widely regarded as being one of the most beautiful squares in Italy!
Sant' Emidio cathedral
The city of Ascoli Piceno was once home to over two hundred towers during the Middle Ages and today, only fifty of that number remains standing.

Tourists can learn all about the reason for so many of these cylindrical stone monuments by booking a walking tour, where they will be guided around by a historical expert and can discover more of this city’s exciting past!

In the afternoon, take an hour or so to explore the magnificent cathedral of Sant’ Emidio, built in honour of Ascoli Piceno’s patron saint. Part of it houses the local art gallery which is well worth a look around.

Walk around and see the many old gates, palaces and bridges left behind by the once powerful Roman Empire and admire the many Renaissance and Gothic style churches that are dotted through the city.
