This seaside city sits on a spur of land jutting out to sea and offers breathtaking views wherever you look here. Start off your day of touring with a visit to the majestic Basilica of San Ciriaco on top of Guasco hill overlooking the mouth of Ancona harbour.

This old and beautifully designed building offers a sense of peacefulness to those who stroll within its tall walls.
Basilica di San Ciriaco
Look up when you go inside to see a marvellous wooden interior roof that resembles the design of an upturned boat! With its intricate Byzantine style architecture and collection of fine artworks, this sacred place is a wonderful cool escape from the hot Italian sun!

Be sure to get a look at the arch of Trajan, a fascinating well preserved Roman monument near Ancona, and the Museo Nazionale delle Marche where lots of artefacts dating from Roman and Etruscan times are on display.

This is a wonderful way to pass a few hours and learn more about the history and growth of Ancona.
The famous Fontana del Calamo
Ancona is a place off the beaten track that offers tourists a true insight into authentic Italian life. This was a town built across two hills overlooking a large and prosperous harbour. It was first settled in the 4th century by the Greeks. Ancona has seen its fair share of destruction as it was badly bombed during World War II and was victim to a terrible earthquake in 1972.

When touring around the city centre, why not enjoy a picnic lunch beside the 16th century Fontana del Calamo, a collection of intricately designed water spouts in Corso Mazzini before spending a lovely afternoon walking around and admiring the many old buildings that still stand in the historic centre.

So why not take a day to explore all that Ancona has to offer, you won’t be disappointed!
