The magnificent city of L’Aquila in the region of Abruzzo is a perfect place to visit on your Italian vacation! The name literally translates as ‘The Eagle’ and like the bird; the city represents great strength and power in its rich heritage and beauty. L’Aquila is the capital city of Abruzzo and sits on a hill overlooking the surrounding Valley of the Aterno River.

This magical location is further encased by the majestic Apennines which paint a pretty picture in winter with its snow covered peaks.

L’Aquila is home to a large university which has helped it become a lively and vibrant place to be. It’s approximately one hundred kilometres north of Rome and has become a popular holiday destination among several Italian cities during the summer and winter months.

Tourists would thoroughly enjoy a few days whizzing down the ski slopes of resorts close to L’Aquila. You’ll be in awe of the incredible views you’ll see from the top of these snow covered mountain tops!

The land here is incredibly fertile and large amounts of land are dedicated to growing the very expensive spice called saffron. Thousands of sheep roam the hills and their meat is the main ingredient in rich rustic dishes of the mountains.

There is no nicer flavour than that of a roast leg of lamb, seasoned with fragrant herbs and served with fresh vegetables and a great red wine!

With its surrounding medieval walls, intricate networks of narrow streets and beautiful buildings, this city is full of interesting things to do and see. This superbly designed water feature was built in celebration of the origin of the city of L’Aquila and its surrounding towns and villages.

Terrible earthquakes plagued the city over the centuries and sadly claimed the lives of several thousand people. Today, many of the older building you see in L’Aquila underwent major restructuring after damage caused by these natural disasters. Be sure to visit the massive square shaped Spanish Fort castle at the top of the town which is now the National Museum of Abruzzo.

Here visitors can learn about the rich history of L’Aquila and the disasters it’s experienced in greater depth. Another place of interest is the Roman remains of Rocca Calascio which stands proudly high up in the mountains. It’s the highest castle in Italy and one of the highest in Europe!
