The Arena Di Verona is a Roman amphitheater in Verona, Italy. It was originally built in 30 A.D., and could seat more than 30,000 spectators at that time. The white and pink limestone building was built on a site that was beyond the city walls. The round façade of the amphitheater was completely ruined in an earthquake in 1117. Only the structure’s outer ring survived the quake. However, it remains one of the best preserved structures of the era.
The Arena Di Verona was first opened for theatrical and lyrical performances in 1913 to mark the centenary of birth celebrations of the Giuseppe Verdi. Tenor Giovanni Zenatello and the theatre impresario Ottone Rovato promoted the first lyrical event at the venue. It has since then become the biggest open-air lyrical theatre in the world.
