The beautiful city of Verona in northeastern Italy is a popular tourist destination owing to its ancient heritage and the Roman Arena.

The city of Verona is also the setting for William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, a tragic story of romance that took place during the rule of the Scaliger family.

However, Shakespeare was not the first one to write the tale of the two lovers. Captain Vicenza Luigi da Porto wrote the story in 1524 based on an oral tradition told by an archer named Pellegrino da Verona.

The story was rewritten in 1562 and 1569 by English writers Arthur Brooke and William Painter respectively. Since Shakespeare never visited Italy, most historians believed that he wrote his immortal version of Romeo and Juliet based on the books written by Brooke and Painter.

You can visit Verona today to relive the beauty of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
Juliet's Balcony
The city boasts of several artistic depictions of the era. Many operas, theater performances and paintings have been dedicated to the events and characters of the story. The historic church of S Francesco al Corso is believed to be the place where Romeo and Juliet got married secretly. The area was destroyed several times due to the wars in the region. The complex became the Museum of Frescos in 1973, and is famous for the beautiful crypt containing the tomb of Juliet.

You can also visit the 13th century home that belonged to Juliet. The famous balcony and a bronze statue of Juliet along with Romeo’s home on Via Arche Scaligere are probably the most popular attractions of Verona.
