Napoli Castel dell'Ovo Veduta
The third largest city in Italy, Napoli, or Naples, is also one of the largest European cities situated along the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to being significant in size, Naples is notable for being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world today.
Duomo di Napoli
There were Greek settlements established in the Gulf of Naples way back in the 9th century BC, and the city was a center of the Roman Empire. There are many Roman relics and ruins that you can view here, including the nearby ruin of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Yet in addition to these historic sites, Naples has much to offer its guests in the way of cuisine, music, and art. It has been a major cultural center for hundreds of years, particularly during the Renaissance.

You can learn more about the art and history of Napoli in its extensive museums. To view historical artifacts, the Naples National Archaeological Museum has a fantastic collection. Another site to visit is the Museo di Capodimonte, which was previously a Bourbon palace. It is now an art gallery and museum, featuring a wealth of notable paintings ranging from the 13th to the 18th centuries.

Artists featured here include Caravaggio, El Greco, Titian, and Raphael, just to name a few. Contemporary art is also well represented in the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Donnaregina (MADRE).

An interesting area to explore that takes you deep into the heart of Napoli is the underground cave and tunnel system. This can be toured, along with old Greco-Roman reservoirs and catacombs. Finally, no trip to Napoli would be complete without discussing its culinary delights.
Napoli con Vesuvio
It is internationally famous for its food and wine, being the home of pizza, which is made in wood-burning ovens.

Spaghetti is another typically Italian dish that is frequently eaten in Napoli, commonly eaten with a thick tomato sauce. Gelato, coffee, and a lemon liqueur called limoncello round out the colorful meals that you will find here.
Napoli Maschio Angioino
With an exciting culinary tradition and a rich artistic heritage, there are many reasons to visit this ancient city by the sea.
