Southern Italy offers a slow paced ambiance that travelers who have been on the fast paced whirlwind tours already. Sorrento was founded when the Greeks ruled the Mediterranean, and was the mythological home to Homer's Sirens that Ulysses had to resist in his voyage. Surviving through the centuries and more recently survived the heavy bombing that much of southern Italy suffered during World War II.

Sorrento not only has many things to see and do, but is situated perfectly for a series of day trips to many other towns on the small peninsula. Whether it's a trip to Naples and Pompeii across the Gulf of Naples that the city sits on, or across the sea to the island of Capri, or continue along the coast to the south west to enjoy the small towns along the Amalfi Coast. While the cliffs that Sorrento sits on straddles the beautiful Gulf of Naples, the land surrounding the town is full of lemon and olive groves. The famous liqueur Limoncello is produced in the area and of course olive oil. The Duomo of Sorrento has a gorgeous white facade, but the interior has marble and artworks that have to be seen to be believed. The streets of the medieval section of the city have a plethora of shops and restaurants that you can explore during your days or evenings, with the popular Corso Italia closed to traffic for part of the day and at night. Be sure to visit the Villa Communale park next door to the famous cloisters of the Chiesa di San Francesco, you will be able to enjoy an amazing view of Mount Vesuvius from across the Bay of Naples.

If you use Sorrento as a base to visit much of the region, you are in luck. Trains and ferries can be used to travel to Naples across the great bay or to Capri. You can drive yourself or take buses to the small towns along the Amalfi Coast: Positano, Furore, Ravello, Salerno, Praiano, or Amalfi. Here you can enjoy the cultural and natural beauty of the region.
