A Palio event usually lasts a few days and comprises of music filled streets, colourful banners, medieval style banquets and fairs. Why not stay in a lovely holiday villa rental in Siena or close to Asti where two of the best Palio events take place during the summer months?

Probably the best known Palio event in Italy is the Palio di Siena. It’s a thrilling bareback horse race between ten of the seventeen contrade in the city around the Piazza del Campo. The competition is fierce as the rivals are prepared to do whatever it take to cross the finishing line first; even if it means that a contrada’s horse has to complete it without its jockey! This exhilarating celebration takes place twice annually, on the 2nd of July and the 16th August.
