What better way to learn about the amazing Carnivals of Italy then to attend one?!

Two of the most famous carnivals held in Italy are those of Venice and Viareggio.
The Carnival is a season of festivities where people often dress up and masquerade with some elements of a street circus. A giant party for the public on the streets you could call it.

In Venice, the carnival is kick started with an event called "The Flight of the Angel".

This is held in the Piazza San Marco where an 'Unknown guest of Venice' flies along a rope from the San Marco bell tower down to the middle of the square and is greeted by a crowd in period costumes of Historical Re-enactments. It starts of the festivities with a roar, quite literally, from the crowd and every year, spectators await the "Angel" with bated breath as they cram into the square.
