One of the things that we love best about a vacation in Italy is that it not only offers incredible experiences and stunning locations but often combines the two to utterly magical effect. These experiences are the unforgettable kind that make a holiday a truly once-in-a-lifetime thing. For example, if you are planning on booking a vacation rental in Rome and diving into the beyond endless list of museums, churches, palaces, gardens, architectural gems, works of art, historic sites, and much more besides, then why not combine a visit to a stunning historic church filled with extraordinary works of art in the city with a breath-taking opera experience?

As opera was invented in Italy, it’s always the best place to attend an opera for yourself whether you are a complete first-timer or you are a seasoned fanatic of the art form. La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi and set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, is a tragic opera and one of the most famous and beloved works, and this autumn and winter will be performed in the church of St. Paul's Within the Walls across various dates from September through December 2026. In fact, this gorgeous church acts as a venue for various performances and concerts, including Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Mozart’s Requiem, operatic concertos, a New Year’s concert, and more. Often ballet acts accompany these musical performances and dancers make their way down the aisle, further enhancing the wonder of this cultural experience.
The church itself is fascinating. Often known as the “American Church in Rome”, it is an Episcopalian church and was the first Protestant church built in the city. Located on Via Nazionale in Castro Pretorio, it was completed in 1880 according to the design of English architect George Edmund Street. Standing out with its Gothic Revival style and its polychromatic brick and stone exterior, it is further set apart by the wonderful mosaics inside which pay homage to Ravenna and are distinguished as the largest works by English Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones. So, for anyone lucky enough to attend a concert here, there is already a wealth of art and beauty to admire before the music even begins!

When it comes to the concerts themselves, they are organised and performed by a variety of different groups and as a result vary a little in their exact details and prices. The most inexpensive tickets start out at as little as €20 per person and even the more expensive options will set you back far less than you might imagine for a night at the opera. The cost will also vary depending on where you are sitting in the church, how clear your view is, and how close to the performers you are.
Some things to keep in mind:
- Arrive as early as you can as you will get seats in an area or block but exact seats are often claimed on the night.
- There is no strict dress code but while you may not need to dress up formally, it is probably best not to be overly casual either.
- You will be sitting on a pew with a thin cushion for the duration and this might be two to three hours.
- The venue is wheelchair accessible.
So, if you are considering a stay in a holiday rental in Rome this winter, make your experience of the Eternal City even more memorable with a night at the opera in this extraordinary architectural wonder...
