Wine-lovers, and especially port or sherry fans, who decide to book a villa in Sicily should make note that (among the endless delicious things to eat and drink while on holiday in this part of the world) there is one wine that you should make a point to try. This is the local Marsala wine.
A fortified wine from the area around the city of Marsala in Sicily, Marsala wine can be dry or sweet and is a DOC and PDO product protected by Italian and European law. It is made with the Grillo, Inzolia, Catarratto, and Damaschino white grape varietals, among others.
With different varieties available on the market, they are labelled according to the colour, flavour profile, ageing process, specific blend of grapes used and more – so there is definitely a Marsala for you out there. You just have to go about the (not-so) terribly difficult process of tasting some different kinds and find the right one!
Traditionally an aperitif or dessert wine and also used in cooking, Marsala wine has an important place in Sicilian cuisine and is an unmissable product for any foodies who find a vacation rental in Sicily and who come to begin diving into and exploring the incredible local food offerings.
As an aperitif it is usually drier versions that are served chilled and offered between the first and second courses. As a dessert wine, it will be served at room temperature and will probably be a sweeter variety. Cheeses such as Parmesan, Gorgonzola, Roquefort, and other spicy kinds of cheeses, pastries, and fruits are all common accompaniments to the wine.
So, plan a dreamy holiday in Sicily for this summer and come indulge in all that this wonderful destination has to offer when it comes to things to see, do, and, importantly, to taste!
