After two cast members (Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke) of the hit HBO television show and Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, enthused about their love for the Negroni Sbagliato in 2022, it went viral and became a trending tipple once more but it has very much been a beloved cocktail since its supposedly mistaken origins decades ago.

Literally meaning, “mistaken”, the Negroni Sbagliato hails from the famous Bar Basso in Milan and – in our opinion – is best sampled during a leisurely visit to the famous bar while you enjoy a stay in one of our vacation rentals in Milan.

The most popular origin story says that in 1972 at Bar Basso, the bartender Mirko Stocchetto accidently poured sparkling wine into a Negroni in place of gin. Deciding it was delicious in its own right, he made it its own drink. In 2022, in an interview with Slate, Stocchetto’s son challenged this apocryphal tale by saying that his father had been intentionally experimenting with new types of spritzes when the drink was invented and that it was no mistake at all.

However, whether it was a mistake or simply a catchy name for a new cocktail, this modern classic is a beloved local creation that is a must if you are on holiday in Milan.

If you can’t wait until then, here’s how to make it at home:

Ingredients:

25ml Campari

25ml sweet Vermouth

Sparkling wine to top off

Ice

An orange slice to garnish

Method:

1. Take a highball glass and add the Campari and Vermouth.

2. Next, add the ice and then top off with the sparkling wine.

3. Stir and add the orange slice garnish.

4. Sip and enjoy as you browse our holiday rentals in Milan and plan your escape in this cosmopolitan gem of a city…
