The incredible birthplace of the Renaissance and capital city of Tuscany, Florence, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is home to extraordinary churches designed by famous architects and filled with masterpieces by world-renowned artists, stunning palaces that housed the noble families of Florence and inspired architects all over the world, museums boasting collections of some of the most beloved and iconic works of art ever made, pretty streets and awe-inspiring town squares, world-class restaurants and bars, ancient markets and chic boutiques, flagship stores of some of the most recognisable fashion brands globally, and much more besides. Those who book one of our luxury villas in Florence, therefore, and spend time in the city will discover that there is no shortage of astounding things to see and do. However, much of these attractions require spending money and, very quickly, that can start to add up. It is always handy to have some excellent free activities to add into your itinerary when on vacation and Florence has some great ones. So, here are the best things to see and do for free while you enjoy a holiday in Florence...

1. The View from Piazzale Michelangelo
One of the most popular spots in the city for taking in a sweeping panorama over Florence’s lovely skyline, the Piazzale Michelangelo has now become a seriously buzzy hotspot, especially at sunset. Tourists and locals alike gather and sit around with pizzas or drinks to enjoy the sight of the sun sinking down behind the city and the sky being painted in wonderful colours. There is such a buzz of excitement now that performers often come and sing or show off talents during this evening gathering and often it turns into one big dance party. Of course, you can come at other times during the day to simply enjoy the view or at sunrise for much smaller crowds so that you can really take it all in and get some amazing photos – it really comes down to your preference! So, for the best view in the city and an excellent free activity, make the trek to Piazzale Michelangelo.

2. A Wander Around the Rose Garden
While you’re in the area, just down the hill a little, you’ll find Florence’s lovely Rose Garden. Also boasting rather impressive views over the city but a little quieter still, it has an even more impressive collection of roses. With masterpieces that are as magnificent in their own right as any housed within the famous museums of the city, the Rose Garden has a collection of a whopping 400 different varieties of roses as well as 1000 botanical varieties, lemons, and other plants, a Japanese garden, and 12 sculptures by the Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon. So, if you’re enjoying a stay in a vacation rental in Florence then be sure to savour this extraordinary attraction – completely free of charge!

3. Visiting the Duomo
One of the greatest wonders along the aforementioned iconic skyline of Florence is the city’s impressive cathedral with its incredible dome by Brunelleschi perfectly crowning the building. A key landmark and one of the must-see attractions for anyone who books a holiday rental in Florence, the Duomo is also free to visit! You just need to enter through the door on the left-hand side of the façade to do so without a ticket. Then, you can take in the astounding and soaring architecture, the Vasari frescoes in the distance, gorgeous stained glass windows, and many different and beautiful objects created by famous artists for the church (though many have been lost or are now held within the museum attached to the cathedral). If you want to get a closer view of the frescoes by going upstairs or to be able to access the roof and views from the city there, you do need to buy a ticket but you can still enjoy much of this gem even if you don’t bother to do so – and avoid having to go up any stairs!

4. Great Works of Art at the Loggia dei Lanzi
Another key art and culture experience that can be enjoyed anytime one books a villa in Florence is a visit to the Loggia dei Lanzi. Found right outside the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence’s historic city hall, the Loggia dei Lanzi is a building that is open on two sides and has large arched openings to the front, revealing an array of sculptural works that are on display and accessible 24/7. The loggia itself is a wonder and the result of collaboration between several artists but the pieces inside are the real star of the show. Cellini’s Perseus, an idealised male nude in marble holding aloft the head of the slain Medusa, and Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women, with its various viewpoints in the round and dynamic action, are just two of the masterpieces on display. The wider piazza in which the loggia is found, the Piazza della Signoria also has more extraordinary works to discover. 5. Free Outdoor Cinema Screenings in Scenic Settings
Finally, if you happen to be on vacation in Florence during the summer months, be sure to see if there will be any Apriti Cinema screenings during your time in the city! This scheme offers free cinema screenings in unique locations around the city – they are being held in the courtyard of the famous Uffizi Gallery this summer – as part of the Estate Fiorentina programme of cultural events organised by the city. Admission is free but on a first come, first served basis.
