Tiramisu

Certain Italian dishes have become so famous that they are common household names almost everywhere in the world. This includes, of course, pizza and various kinds of pasta dishes but it is also true of some sweet dishes. Among the most well-known Italian desserts, tiramisu is one of the best loved and most iconic. Typically made of finger biscuits, egg yolks, sugar, coffee, mascarpone cheese, and cocoa powder, the dessert now differs massively in shape, size, and specific flavours and ingredients as all sorts of variations have been created.

Originally from the Veneto region of Italy, it comes from a vacation destination ideal for sampling delicious glasses of prosecco, spending day-trips exploring the magical city of Venice, discovering the lush landscape dotted by gorgeous historic villas, and heading to the Alps to hike or ski. So, if you are already considering a vacation rental in Veneto and a holiday spent enjoying all that the region has to offer but you also happen to have a sweet tooth, then an opportunity to sample the beloved Italian dessert on its home ground is one more great reason to visit...

As tiramisu is one of the most famous Italian desserts, many would like to lay claim to its origins and they have, as a result, become somewhat shrouded in mystery and uncertainty. However, many accounts agree that it was likely invented at a restaurant called Le Beccherie in Treviso (which is still open and can be visited today in order to try the supposed original!) by its owner and a confectioner named Roberto Linguanotto and his apprentice, Francesca Valori, whose maiden name was Tiramisu.

Another baker, named Carminantonio Iannaccone claims that it was he who actually invented it back on the 24th of December in 1969 and that he then sold it to Le Beccherie to be served to their customers. Other stories, still, say that it was actually invented all the way back in the 17th century in Siena and was created to honour the Grand Duke Cosimo III, though this seems less likely as the dish is not mentioned in cookbooks until at least the 1960s.

Though it cannot be certain which story is actually correct, we can surely vouch for the fact that tiramisu probably rarely tastes sweeter than when it is being enjoyed on holiday in Veneto or during a stay in a villa in Italy – that’s the kind of dolce vita that we’re after!
