1. Protected products

As we noted, Emilia-Romagna boasts lots of famous foodie favourites and many of them are protected under the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) certifications. This seal of quality and authenticity reflects key items that others have tried to reproduce elsewhere to little success and shows that the real deal is worth labelling with indicators that show their unique value and legally protecting their status. Just some of the examples that can be found by those who book a villa in Emilia-Romagna and dive into the culinary scene of the region include Parma ham, Parmigiano-Reggiano, Bologna Mortadella ham, traditional Balsamic vinegar, Zampone di Modena sausage, and much more besides!

2. The food museums

Emilia-Romagna, as noted, is home to a selection of food museums – somewhere for a serious foodie to take things to the next level and to really learn all about the culinary heritage and history of the region. In fact, there are over 20 different museums like this to be found all across the region during a vacation in Emilia-Romagna. Some key examples include the Museo della Salumeria Villani, located in the pretty medieval town of Castelnuovo Rangone in the flatlands surrounding Modena, which is dedicated entirely to the production and history of charcuterie. There is also the Parmigiano-Reggiano Museum in an ancient dairy farm in Soragna near Parma, Langhirano’s Parma Ham museum, Collecchio’s Tomato Museum in an ancient monastic complex and dedicated to the key ingredient in Italian cuisine (which was only introduced in the 15th or 16th century and was first an ornamental plant), the Museum of Bread on the banks of the Po River, Brisighella’s open-air olive oil museum, and much more besides. Almost every ingredient you could imagine has its own museum and many museums also still sell products or are located on farms or in businesses that produce food products, meaning you get to learn more and seek out the best of the best products as well!
