We talk about a lot of different destinations with impossibly blue waters and incredible beaches but one of the most truly magical and unbelievably colourful spots in the world can be found if you book a villa in Sicily and head out on a day-trip to the sensational Egadi Islands.

Sometimes known as the Aegadian Islands in English and called the Isole Egadi in Italian, the three islands of the group include Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo. Those who have been dreaming of a vacation in Sicily may already be familiar with the famous volcanic Aeolian Islands and the exclusive island of Capri, but this group of islands has more than enough appeal and acts as a perfectly laid-back spot to escape to. Largely popular among Italians, there will likely be smaller crowds of international tourists and you’ll not only find better value for your money but also awe-inspiring azure waters, perfect spots to go swimming and diving, and much more besides.

While fishing has traditionally been the most important industry on the islands, tourism is increasingly important and this has led to greater care and protection. As a result, they are now located in the largest protected marine area in Europe. Home to Posidonia meadows, important habitats to many fish that are like large submerged tropical forests, as well as both resident and migratory bird species, some special cetaceans, sea turtles, the rare Monk Seal, and many other extraordinary and precious examples of flora and fauna, this is a truly magical area of natural beauty. It is a relief to know that this wonder is protected.

When it comes to visiting the islands, most head to Favignana, the largest of the three and rent bikes to explore the coastline and the endless ravines, coves, caves, and turquoise waters, which make for ideal swimming spots. The pretty old port town also boasts a selection of lovely local restaurants with amazing sea views. Then there is Levanzo, with its prehistoric cave-paintings at Grotta del Genovese and postcard-perfect views. Spend time in the charming whitewashed port village, enjoy the excellent walking routes, and discover more wonderful swimming spots, including the diving area between Cala Minnola and Punta Altarella, where you’ll swim past a Roman shipwreck and ancient pottery. Finally, there is the mountainous and wild Marettimo, with its range of hiking and trekking routes, wildflowers, Norman castle-towers, Roman Houses, Byzantine church, submerged and emerged caves, and other surprises – for those looking for adventure, it’s ideal!
