One of the best preserved and most unspoiled natural areas in all of Italy, it consists of 1500 hectares of marshland along the Tuscan coast that is separated from the sea on the west and east by two 6km strips of land and by the Argentario headland. On a third strip of land that stretches into the centre of the lagoon, you will find the town of Orbetello itself and a bridge connecting it to Monte Argentario, creating a dramatic picture overall.
An area of immense natural loveliness, it is partially comprised of a WWF-protected natural reserve that is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna and, in particular, many bird species. For bird-watchers, it is an utter paradise but even the average visitor will be astounded by one particular avian phenomenon – the stunning sight of thousands of pink flamingoes.
In their greatest numbers during autumn and winter, these magnificent creatures number at around 4,000 at their peak. The vision of the beautiful pink birds in such a quantity and in such a setting is quite the sight to behold and something you will never forget.
Plus, there is a specific birdwatching path that can be accessed independently or with the assistance of a tour guide from September to April in the park and this boasts nine different observation points along a 1.2km route.
