Tuscany is, of course, famous as a major destination for art-lovers all around the world to come and visit some of the best museums and art galleries in all the globe to see pieces by world-renowned artists. When most people think of seeing art while on holiday in Tuscany, they tend to picture great historical works by famous Italian artists such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Donatello, and more in very formal spaces. However, if you are browsing our Italy Villas and considering a luxury villa in Pisa, then there is a really important and incredible artwork that many might not realise is in the city – perhaps because it matches none of the above descriptions. Dating to the late 80s, by a famous American graffiti artist, and located outdoors, Keith Haring’s Tuttomondo may not be what one expects of art in Tuscany but it is a must-see piece for serious art fans who vacation in Tuscany.
Painted in 1989, this bright and colourful and typically Haring mural was his last public work before he died in 1990. Famous for his Subway Drawings, Haring was the poster boy of graffiti art. Aiming to make pieces that would be universal and easily read, he used symbols to replace language and to express himself.
Created after he happened to meet a Pisan student in New York, Tuttomondo was produced when Haring was already beginning to fall sick due to HIV-related complications and made with the students of Caparol Center, the suppliers of the acrylic tempera paint. Painted on the side of the old convent of S. Antonio, it expresses peace and harmony in the world through the depiction of thirty interconnected and colourful typical Haring figures.
Free to visit whenever you want, this stunning piece can be enjoyed as you stroll past or while enjoying a coffee in the Keith Café across the road during a stay in one of our amazing vacation rentals in Pisa.
