Abruzzo is a region of Italy that abounds in stunning beaches. Its lengthy coastline is dotted by craggy cliffs, pretty little coves, wide sandy bays, a great wealth of different kinds of beaches to chose from, and many other spots that boast idyllic marine beauty. However, one of the most picturesque areas along the whole coast, that is a true must-see for anyone who finds a villa in Abruzzo and is looking to plan perfect days by the sea, is the Riserva di Punta Aderci, or Regional Nature Reserve of Punta Aderci. This utterly evocative and picture-perfect stretch of the Abruzzo coast with its homonymous promontory, was the first reserve to be set up in Abruzzo on the coast back in 1998 and is a gorgeous and wonderfully preserved gem that boasts some of the most truly extraordinary beaches in all of Italy.
Extending over 285 hectares and 5km along the coastline from the Punta Penna beach in the south to the mouth of the Sinello River in the north, this is an unspoiled and utterly remarkable part of the world that Vanity Fair ranked at the top of their list of the loveliest and cleanest beaches in the globe. Open to the public year round, with free access, it is a hub of natural beauty and potential activities and adventures.
The various beaches in the area, of course, are perfect for days of laying out on the sand and relaxing or cooling off in the water or playing around and trying different kinds of water sports while on vacation in Abruzzo. Libertini beach, located between the Aderci promontory and the Punta Penna beach, can be accessed from both spots or from the sea and is characterised by a pebble shore and famously clear waters. Mottagrossa beach, meanwhile, is another pebble beach with rich turquoise waters, is the longest beach in the reserve, and is a wild and unspoiled gem to the north of the reserve. Parallel to the beach, there is also a panoramic path around 20m high that takes in some really wonderful views over the coast. Punta Penna beach boasts wonderful dunes, golden sand, and Mediterranean scrub and is the only beach in the reserve with services. The dunes of this beach are also home to many different species of birds, making it ideal for bird-watching and enjoying a day at the beach. The promontory of Punta Aderci itself also hugs a secluded little cove of its own that is the ideal beach for those looking to avoid potential crowds that can often be found elsewhere in the reserve and to enjoy some peace and quiet. To the north of the Port of Vasto there is a wide inlet with a wide sandy beach that slopes down to meet crystal clear waters and this is a particularly popular spot for those looking to go canoeing (canoes can be rented from the Information Point of the Reserve at the Punta Aderci entrance) or snorkelling.
If you’re looking to enjoy some outdoor pursuits that don’t involve getting into the water then hiking is a definite must and there are lots of wonderful trails and viewpoints to discover in the Regional Nature Reserve of Punta Aderci. There is the aforementioned panoramic path above Mottagrossa that stretches for about 3km along pine forests, valleys, Mediterranean scrub, and the sea and can be explored on foot or by the bicycles that can be rented from the Information Point on Punta Penna beach. In fact, there are some 32km of bicycle paths to discover in the area, which take in the whole northern part of Vasto and cross the Lebba and Sinello rivers. At the top of the Punta Aderci there is also a walk bringing you to the highest point of the promontory from which you can admire the entire reserve and the remarkable profiles of the mountains of the three national parks: Majella, Gran Sasso-Laga and Monti Sibillini. On the official website of the reserve, you will find a handy guide to the various trails and paths through the park that can be undertaken on foot or by these rented bikes.
The Information Points from which one can rent the bikes and canoes also offer umbrella rentals to provide shade for those hanging out on the beaches and can arrange guides to take you on tours of the reserve and introduce you to the rich and fascinating flora and fauna of the region. All of these services, however, are only on offer when the Information Points are open, through the summer season, from the second weekend of June to the third weekend of September. So, while the park is open and free to access whenever you want, do keep in mind that all of the services are not available right throughout the year. Please also keep in mind that those who have found a villa in Italy where pets are allowed and who are travelling with a dog can bring their furry pal to the reserve but access to all beaches but Mottagrossa Beach is prohibited for animals and they must be leashed at all times while on the trails. You are not permitted to let animals loose into the wild areas of the reserve in order to protect it.
So, if you’re looking to stroll, swim, explore, admire remarkable views and enjoy an utterly unspoiled spot of natural beauty and you have found a vacation rental in Abruzzo, then be sure to come and discover the Riserva di Punta Aderci on your next holiday in Italy.
