Marina Serra
Beach-lovers of the world will discover that a villa in Apulia is definitely in order as there is truly an astounding array of the most exceptional beaches and seaside beauties to be explored and enjoyed across the region. However, in particular, if you head to the province of Salento, to the very south of Apulia, you will find a rather impressive selection of some stunning naturally-occurring swimming pools that have been carved out of the cliff-sides and coastlines of the area by the sea and wind and geological phenomena. We have previously mentioned the impossibly lovely Grotta della Poesia, which was named among the most beautiful natural pools in the world by both National Geographic and CNN Travel, but another charming example is the Piscina Naturale di Marina Serra, or the Marina Serra Natural Pool.
Unlike the more famous and more visited Grotta della Poesia, the Marina Serra Natural Pool is not a sinkhole but, rather, a pool formed by caves and rocks that surround a body of crystal clear water along the coastline of the Adriatic, overlooked by the ancient Torre Palane. There is a good deal more surrounding space on the rocks here for tanning and room in the pool for swimming and splashing. More serious swimmers can readily swim out through the grottoes and into the open sea just beyond the pool to really stretch their arms and legs and get a proper work out in. There are also lots of fish swimming about, making it a great place to snorkel! As the pool is overlooked by a charming café that is perched over this stunning natural phenomenon, the Marina Serra Natural Pool is an ideal spot to go if there are some in the party who just want to admire the rather romantic and impressive view without getting wet themselves or for those who are looking to make more of a day of it and want a nice area to lounge with a snack and a drink post-swim.

Despite being less well-known internationally, the Marina Serra Natural Pool is a popular spot and, therefore, is often quite busy during the summer months and on both weekdays as well as the weekend. Those looking to avoid crowds and wanting to have the spot more to themselves should aim to visit early in the morning to beat the bigger numbers and to snag a nearby parking spot. However, a great benefit of this natural pool is that, while still very picturesque, it is actually really well-equipped as well and boasts shallow water that is ideal for kids and weaker swimmers or those who cannot swim at all but still want to play in the water or cool off, easy access to the water via ramps and ladders, toilet and shower facilities, and the aforementioned café where you can readily grab various snacks and drinks throughout the day. You will need to clamber over stone to reach the pool and the bottom of the pool itself can be quite sharp so those with sensitive feet should wear proper water shoes or pool shoes where possible to avoid cuts and injuries.

Exceptionally beautiful and beyond picturesque, a perfect place to relax and unwind, and somewhere where non-swimmers, weak swimmers, and swimming enthusiasts alike can all have their needs catered to, this is an ideal spot along the coast in Apulia to spend dreamy and unforgettable days at the beach. Browse our vacation rentals in Apulia today and come discover the diverse and incomparable charms of this magical spot and the rest of her incredible coastline on your next vacation in Italy!
