Grotta di Lord Byron
Those who love pretty beaches and impossibly picturesque swimming spots will rather quickly discover that if they find a villa in Liguria, there are endless options of both to choose from in the immediate vicinity. Browsing through our blog, you will see lots of posts in which we highlight particular beaches, beach clubs, and coastal areas and in which we compile lists of some of the best of the best among them. However, if you're after a swimming spot that might not have a massive sandy beach on which to lay out but that is steeped in history and is a perfectly scenic gem in which to cool off while exploring the Porto Venere area, then we highly recommend a visit to the stunning Grotta di Lord Byron.
The Grotta di Lord Byron is named for the beloved and rakish British poet as it is the spot where he is said to have swum from the cave, 8km across the Gulf of La Spezia, and to Lerici to visit the Shelleys who were staying there at the time, to have swum there for leisure generally, and to have gone there to meditate. In fact, he is said to have been immensely fond of the spot and deeply connected to it. One look at the place can clearly explain why the poet decided on it: it is just poetic and picturesque in its beauty. Located in a small cove to the west of Porto Venere, it is affecting and dramatic: surmounted by the elegant Church of San Pietro and the walls of the Porto Venere castle, arranged in naturally-occurring rocky terraces that descend into the rich blue waters, the open mouth of the cave, and with the craggy cliffs of the surrounding cove. All of this forms a very appealing setting that is made even more romantic by its history.

Formerly known as Grotta Arpaia, it is a spot that was once home to a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess of love herself, Venus. In fact, the name of the area of Porto Venere is likely connected to this very fact. Discovered when the cave collapsed, this connection to Venus seems very fitting for a place favoured by one of the greatest writers of love poetry in the English language and an infamous rogue.

Considered one of the must-see spots in Porto Venere, a town often dubbed the, “Pearl of the Cinque Terre,” and the unofficial, “Sixth town of the Cinque Terre,” the Grotta di Lord Byron is positioned in the Gulf of La Spezia which is itself often referred to as the Golfo dei Poeti (Gulf of the Poets), due to the slew of other famous literary figures who have also been attracted to this romantic and lovely area throughout history. There is plenty to see in the town in addition to a wide array of different stunning hiking and walking trails to be explored along the striking cliffs that surround the area and boast astonishing views over the sea, the architectural gems perched majestically along the coast, and out to the islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto. As such, one can readily work up a sweat while discovering the gorgeous scenery and wonderful vistas of this part of the coast. If you find yourself in that group, then the Grotta di Byron makes for a perfectly picturesque place in which to cool off and cap off a day wandering this exceptionally gorgeous part of the world. And, of course, the area in and around the cave is also well worth exploring as well, just be sure to be careful as you do so!

So, if you were considering a vacation in Italy and you were looking for an exceptionally scenic spot in which to relax, explore, and take in wonderful views, then get browsing our villas in the Cinque Terre and our vacation rentals in Liguria and discover this impossibly pretty and romantic gem.
