Activities at Berchida Beach
Imagine, if you will, perfectly white, soft sand meeting crystal-clear, sparkling depths that range in hue from azure to deep green depending on the day. Oh, and on those sands, looking out into that impossibly beautiful sea, is a group of beige, cream, and tan cows, all laid out and enjoying the beach.

This is the picturesque sight that you can reasonably expect to behold for yourself should you find a vacation rental in Sardinia and plan a day at the truly singular and unique Spiaggia di Berchida, or Berchida Beach, located near Siniscola in the Province of Nuoro in East Sardinia.
Berchida Beach is a long and spacious beach, a pretty half-moon stretching over several kilometers along the coast, 12km north-east of Orosei and near the foot of Monte Urcatu. Looking out into the vast and deep blue depths of the Tyrrhenian Sea, this white sandy beach is actually bordered by two other lovely beaches – the Spiaggia di Bidderosa to the north and the Spiaggia sa Curcurica to the south - and is backed by two lagoons. The smaller of these two lagoons, the Stagno di Bidderosa, is a stunning natural oasis, a breeding ground for pink flamingos, and home to herons. Coastal forests, islands, coves, archaeological sites, little villages, and more are all located in the surrounding area and the strand of Berchida itself is dotted with centuries-old juniper trees and Mediterranean scrub, making this one of the most scenic stretches of coast that one could hope to see.

A true earthly paradise, it is no surprise that Berchida Beach has been voted as being one of the best beaches in Italy and the Mediterranean on multiple occasions throughout the years. Utterly unspoiled by mass tourism or development of the area, it has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag for its cleanliness and beauty. The beach is further recommended by the fact that it is rarely busy or crowded, even during the height of the summer tourism season. Often seeming like a hidden corner of the island as one approaches and finds they have it close to themselves, it is ideal if you want to avoid more bustling spaces in favour of peace and quiet and is a perfect place to come and relax.
However, despite the somewhat remote and rather untouched nature of Berchida Beach, it is not without amenities and resources and has showers, bathrooms, kiosks selling snacks, ice-creams, and drinks, bathing establishments where you can rent loungers and umbrellas, and canoe and pedal boat rentals for fun excursions out on the water for the more active types. Additionally, with the soft sand of the beach slowly sloping into the sea and the water remaining shallow for some distance, Berchida is ideal for those travelling with children or less strong swimmers. Plus, the fact that the beach has been awarded a Green Flag, which is assigned by pediatricians to recommended seaside areas for child tourism, makes it even more appealing for concerned parents who want the best for their children.

Finally, the cows that we mentioned up top – where do they come from? Well, as Berchida acts as a barrier to the Rio Berchida, creating a homonymous pond richly populated by animal species and which is a source of water for the domesticated species that local farmers have in the area. It is not uncommon to spot their herds of cattle and sheep grazing around and on the beach, therefore, particularly in the colder months. So, you may not take in the extraordinary sight of these handsome cows on the pristine white sand and framed by the beautiful jewel tones of the sea unless you have found a villa in Sardinia and are travelling out of season but, no matter when you find yourself at Berchida Beach, you will always find an especially gorgeous paradise on earth in Italy.
