While Da Vinci is most famous as an artist today, he was a true Renaissance Man, indeed, and a man of science and Archimedes was one of the city’s most illustrious sons of all time and one of the most important men in the early exploration of scientific discovery. Both men were fascinating inventors and makers and this museum explores their work and research and displays recreations of the machines that they designed. The Museum of Leonardo Da Vinci and Archimedes Syracuse is an interactive and deeply interesting institution that adults and children alike can learn from and enjoy while exploring the city.
The museum is located inside a historic former convent building and displays 60 machines that are recreations of inventions designed by the two geniuses, alongside panels with information. However, this is not a stuffy, traditional museum experience. You can admire and touch the objects, look at their mechanisms and begin to understand how it is that they work. There are also workshops designed for children (aged 3 to 12) in which they can learn about the materials from which the machines are made, the basic operations of mechanics, elements of physics and other scientific disciplines, and more. The visually impaired are also made feel welcome by this hands-on approach in the museum and there is a tactile path through the space that allows these visitors to also learn about and explore the machines.
In addition to all of this, there is a section of the museum called the Collection of Anatomy Studies to be explored that is dedicated to Da Vinci’s interest in human anatomy and study of the human body, which was both scientific and was useful in his art as it better informed his translation of human bodies and movement onto the page and into sculptural works. The museum also tracks the influence of the earlier work of the scientist and mathematician Archimedes, one of the great geniuses of antiquity, on Da Vinci, who came centuries later, though he could not have truly known the ins and outs of Archimedes’ as there would have been no translations of the main body of his work in Da Vinci's time.
Charting two of the great thinkers in the history of the world and of science and some of their most interesting ideas and inventions, this museum is interactive, engaging, informative, and, most importantly, fun. If you have found a vacation rental in Syracuse or even a holiday rental in Sicily and are interested in Da Vinci, Archimedes, science, great museum experiences, or all of the above, then it is definitely a must-see to make time for as you explore the truly beautiful and fascinating city of Syracuse.
