The Jonian Dolphin Conservation is a Taranto-based marine life conservation institute and organisation that studies dolphins, whales, and more in the Ionian Sea and the Gulf of Taranto. Specialised in studying environmental impacts on marine life, how marine mammals communicate, and protecting various species, it is an extraordinary organisation doing great work. However, it is not only their work with the creatures but also their outreach program to the public and schools that make it a particularly wonderful organisation and one of the top places to visit when you are in Italy. Those interested in aquatic life can actually join the crew on day-trips and this is an incredible and truly magical experience that is a must for those who have found a vacation rental in Apulia.

At 10am in the morning a special 40 foot catamaran designed and equipped specifically for cetacean research activities leaves from Molo Sant'Eligio port in Taranto and takes visitors along with the team of experts and researchers as they work, giving you a chance to observe the creatures themselves and listen to their communications with each others as well as to watch the researchers capture data, conduct environmental checks on the water quality and gather other scientific readings, which are then passed on to the Ocean Biographic Information Systems.
Some of the characters that you can expect to meet during the experience include giant sea turtles, various different species of dolphins, and different whales too. The animals race alongside the boat, come up close, or linger in the periphery, and the crew give great explanations that are particularly engaging for kids. As well as spotting marine life, the trip allows you to swim, enjoy the cruise and the sun, see sights like the inner Taranto bay, the castle, the moving bridge, the old town, the mussels' plantations, and the military harbor. By 3.30pm you'll find yourself back at the harbour and done for the day, delighted after all of the fun and excitement you will have experienced!
The “Researchers for a day” trip costs 40 euros for adults, 20 euros for kids between four and eleven and is free for kids under three years of age and is a truly magical experience and a must if you are spending time in this part of Italy.
