Located in the upper Bionaz Valley, the Place Moulin Dam is a hydroelectric dam that powers the surrounding area and was built between 1961 and 1965. With it, Lake Prarayer, an artificial lake, was also born. It is the largest water basin in the region and one of the largest dams in Europe. It is on a truly dizzying scale: measuring 155m in height and 678m in length. Views down onto the dam and the lake are always open and accessible to the public though those more interested in the whole project can actually take guided tours inside the facility from May to September.
Set amongst the lush green of the surrounding valley, framed by mountains and peaks, with the Les Petites and Les Grandes Murailles in the backdrop with their impressive glaciers, and with wildflowers and pines abounding, the rich aquamarine of the artificial lake and the concrete mammoth that is the dam really stand out and paint the most striking of pictures. If you find yourself in this part of Italy, it is well worth seeking out and taking in with your own eyes.
