Recently, we discussed the beautiful building, art space, and cafeteria of Chiostro del Bramante, a cloister that was originally part of a monastery complex in the centre of Rome, just steps away from the famous Piazza Navona. It is a stunning space that now acts as a cultural centre, which is used for various purposes, including hosting events and regular excellent temporary exhibitions. Currently it is hosting the highly photographed and visually stunning, “Dream: L'Arte Incontra I Sogni” (“Art Meets Dreams”), which will continue into May and is a magical must-see art experience in Rome at the moment. If you have found a villa in Rome, it is definitely something to pencil in to your itinerary.
“Dream: L'Arte Incontra I Sogni” is curated by Danilo Eccher and brings together the works of several of the great protagonists of contemporary art, all themed around dreams. It is, “an exhibition about desires, expectations, fantasies and exorcized fears,” and allows visitors to give shape to, and explore, their own dreams. The exhibition, “considers the dream as an element of reflection, of discovery, as a private expression, as a gateway into the deepest space of the soul.”
The works are all either site-specific or have been redesigned for the spaces of the Chiostro del Bramante and, through the direct involvement of the artists, it has transformed the exhibition into one giant narrative that takes visitors on a journey, through a series of passages, stages, and twists and turns. The artists represented by the exhibition include Jaume Plensa, Anselm Kiefer, Mario Merz, Giovanni Anselmo, Christian Boltanski, Doris Salcedo, Henrik Håkansson, Wolfgang Laib, Claudio Costa, Kate MccGwire, Anish Kapoor, Tsuyoshi Tane, Ryoji Ikeda, Bill Viola, Alexandra Kehayoglou, Peter Kogler, Luigi Ontani, Ettore Spalletti, Tatsuo Miyajima, and James Turrell and some highlights include a man lying on the ground beneath a boundless starry sky by Kiefer and MccGwire's mysterious creature made of feathers that twists like a fearsome Demogorgon.
