If you have always wanted to visit Rome, we recommend a visit over Christmas. Not only is the city lit up, decorated, and full of festive cheer and activity at this time of the year but it is also a great time for tourists as there tends to be smaller tourist crowds to contend with. While things close on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, the days either side of the holidays are when Rome is at its least hectic. As a tourist destination where you will always have to contend with crowds of some description, it is a real bonus to get it at its best and least insane. So, if you have always wished to see the Eternal City for yourself, browse our vacation rentals in Rome and get planning the Christmas getaway in Rome of your dreams!
In fact, the best day of the year to see lots of Rome’s most famous attractions is the 26th of December when locals are recovering from their feasting the day before and fewer tourists are about. This is when queue times will be at their shortest, meaning that you can enjoy actually visiting the attractions and spend more time seeing things than waiting in line to see them. For things like the Colosseum, where queues are usually minimally an hour long, this really makes it especially worth your while! Other sites like the Forum and Borghese Gallery will offer similar experiences but do keep in mind that the Vatican Museums don’t reopen until the 27th of December. Shops, as a general rule, will be closed on both the 25th and the 26th and, unlike in the UK and Ireland, there won’t be sales on the 26th as sales are strictly regulated in Italy and happen just twice a year. However, all of this will only add to the special experience of Rome that you can get at this time of year, when the mobs of people wandering the city get smaller and you have more space to breathe and enjoy this utterly magical place at your leisure.
Rome is always a good idea – Hepburn may have said that about Paris but we’re sure she felt the same way about Rome – but it is an especially good idea over the Christmas Season!
