Trieste is an incredibly pretty seaside city in the north of Italy and there are plenty of beautiful buildings all around it but one of the most striking of them all is the Faro della Vittoria, or Victory Lighthouse. The tallest landmark in Trieste, it is built on Gretta Hill and located to the north of the city centre. Built to commemorate fallen soldiers during WWI, light the Gulf of Trieste and celebrate the annexation of the city to the Kingdom of Italy, it was begun in 1923, according to the design of Arduino Berlam.
Measuring almost 68m tall, it is among the top ten tallest lighthouses in the world and was built in an example of the game of one-upmanship with the Germans, who had previously built a 62m tall Victory Tower in Berlin. Boasting some of the most extraordinary views in Italy, it is a truly beautiful place. Just find a vacation rental in Trieste and come take it in for yourself.
Topped by a 7-tonne copper statue of Winged Victory by Giovanni Mayer, the lighthouse also has a 9m tall statue of a seaman that is affixed to the front with an inscription by D'Annunzio beneath it reading: “Shine and remind of the fallen on the sea MCMXV – MCMXVIII”. It is also a functioning lighthouse to this day.
Open to the public, you will have to climb 285 steps to reach to the top but the view truly is worth the effort and sweat involved in getting there. Taking in sweeping views over the town and then out across the Gulf of Trieste, it is truly an extraordinary sight. If you are exploring the town of Trieste (and we really recommend that you take any opportunity you might have to do so), then it is a must-see attraction.
