There is a system of simple suspension bridges, known as Tibetan bridges, that are draped between two peaks in the Apennines and the main bridge is the Ponte alla Luna, or Bridge to the Moon. It is named for Rocco Petrone, a mechanical engineer and son of emigrants from the area, who was the director of launch operations at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in 60s and a director of the Apollo program.
Nearly 1,000 feet long, it is suspended almost 400 feet above the ground, and takes at least a half hour to cross. Not for the faint of heart, it does offer truly extraordinary views and a once-in-a-lifetime adrenaline rush, leading you to a glass platform with panoramic views over all of the surrounding scenery and spectacular vistas of the historic village Sasso di Castalda, in particular.
