The Castello di Gorizia, or Castle of Gorizia, is an 11th century beauty located on a hill that both boasts an amazing panoramic view over Gorizia and is positioned close to the heart of its centre. First recorded in a document from 1001, the castle grew in size and power over the years. Today, the building largely reflects enlargements and changes made between the 13th and 16th centuries. However, during World War I the castle was bombed and badly damaged, leaving little more than a ruin and was actually rebuilt in 1934-37, following its original 16th century design. This was effectively executed and the castle still retains an authentic medieval appearance.
Today, the castle is open to the public and is a fascinating attraction, along with the two adjoining buildings, Casa Dornberg and Casa Tasso, that house the Provincial Museums of Borgo Castello. This museum is home to some incredible collections, which are diverse and are dedicated to a range of topics, including archaeology, fashion, applied arts and WWI.
Come explore the lovely and well-tended gardens and then head into the beautiful buildings of the castle itself where you will find: 17th and 18th century furniture and an important collection of wonderful paintings throughout; the Sala della Musica (Music Room), with its perfect reproductions of ancient instruments; and the Sala dei Cavalieri (Knights' Room), with its Museum of the Middle Ages in Gorizia. Then head to the restaurant and the other buildings and museums such as the First World War Museum, the Museum of Fashion and of Applied Arts, the Picture Gallery and the Archaeological Collection.
