Pani Ca Meusa
One of the things that travelling foodies will want to do on any trip is to try local delicacies and dishes that cannot be found anywhere else. If you are one of the people in this number, then find a vacation rental in Sicily and head to Palermo. Pani ca meusa is a Sicilian street food that literally translates to "bread with spleen" and is a dish exclusively typical of Palermo.
It consists of a sandwich made of soft bread called vastedda or vastella and filled with chopped veal's lung and spleen that have been boiled and then fried in lard and caciocavallo or ricotta can also be added. Sold by sellers known as "meusari" in Palermo's main markets as the Vucciria and the Ballarò, it is a very popular dish.

Generally costing just two euros, the thought of the dish and its contents may gross some out but it is an inexpensive and surprisingly delicious snack that often fills bellies already full of wine and in need of some substance.

Tracing its origins to the 15th century, when the city's butchers were paid for their services in scraps by Kosher-keeping customers and makes use of said scraps of meat in a tasty way, avoiding any waste.

If you are a serious foodie visiting Sicily, this is one of the must-try dishes as it hasn't made it to mainland Italy, like many other signature foods and you will not be able to find or try it anywhere else. Toss any potential squeamishness aside and dig in to this beloved Sicilian classic on your next trip to Italy – you won't be disappointed!
