Bowie in Chicago, 2002
David Bowie Is is a hugely successful exhibition designed by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, to honour and remember the life, times and career of rock superstar, artist, actor, fashion innovator and cultural icon, David Bowie. It is the first international retrospective of his career and life and Bologna is the only Italian city that will be showing the exhibition.

The exhibition first opened in London in 2013 and then toured Chicago, San Paolo, Toronto, Paris, Berlin, Melbourne and Groningen. From July 14th to November 13th 2016, it will be displayed at MAMbo, Bologna's leading museum of modern art.

Once they've found a vacation rental in Emilia Romagna, any Bowie fans visiting the area will want to make time to head to Bologna for this exhibition.
MAMbo, Bologna
Charting across five decades, this is a multi-media exhibition that immerses the viewer in a journey through Bowie's career and creative process and looks at how it was influenced by and influenced other movements in art, design and culture. Curators Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh selected the more than 300 objects from Bowie's personal archive, which include handwritten lyrics, original costumes, photographs and scenographic, as well as some rarer, materials.

Highlights of the exhibition include the iconic Ziggy Stardust body suits from 1972 and designed by Freddie Burretti, photos by Brian Duffy, album sleeve artwork by Guy Peellaert and Edward Bell, video excerpts from films and live performances including The Man Who Fell to Earth, music videos such as Boys Keep Swinging and set designs created for the Diamond Dogs tour in 1974. These are complemented by the more personal items such as the original handwritten lyrics of his songs and some of his instruments.

The exhibition is thematically divided into three main sections for a clear and cohesive display and uses Sennheiser technology for the highest enjoyment of sounds, video installations and animations.

A corresponding calendar of events is being put on by the Education department at MAMbo and will involve a variety of different activities to complement the exhibition.

We may have lost this great and pioneering artist this year but MAMbo's exhibition is a wonderful way to honour and remember how great Bowie truly was.

For music lovers and Bowie fans visiting Italy this summer, it is an absolute must-see attraction and a museum experience quite unlike any other that is currently on display in Italy.
