Gubbio
In the 9th and 10th centuries, the commune of Gubbio first began the construction of a fort on the site where the castle stands today. Then, in 1257 feudal lords began to rise against Gubbio and submitted their castles to the town of Perugia. Count Ugolino of Coccorano gave up the Castle of Petroia, in the 14th century it was purchased by Count Galasso da Montefeltro, then changed hands multiple times before being passed on to the Monte di Pietà of Reggio Emilia, charity institution, in the 17th century. The institution sold the property in the 19th century and it was eventually bought by David Sagrini in 1909. The Sagrini family remain the owners of the castle to this day and have run it as a hotel since 2015.
