Descend the steps down to the Cappuchin Crypt within the Church of Santa Maria della Consezione dei Cappuccini near Piazza Barberini.

Several tiny chapels make up the underground crypt which contains the skeletal remains of Capuchin monks buried and used as chapel decorations by this Catholic Order.

The Capuchin monks took ownership of this church in 1631 and brought with them the remains of 300 cart loads of deceased monks.

Soil was imported from Jerusalem and they were buried in the soil to decompose for up to 30 years until only the skeletons remained behind. A bizarre tradition these Capuchin monks had was to exhume the monk that was buried for the longest time and replace him with one that had just died to make room.

His bones were then used to decorate the Cappuchin Crypt.

There are six sections of the Cappuchin Crypt called the Crypt of the Resurrection, The Crypt of the Three Skeletons, the mass chapel, The Crypt of the Leg and Thigh Bones, The Crypt of the Skulls and the Crypt of the Pelvises!

Although the Cappuchin Crypt seems like a scene out of a grotesque horror story, this Catholic Order of Cappuchin monks insists it is a symbol of our short time on earth and serves as a reminder of the mortality of each one of us.
