The San Carlo Opera House in Naples was built in the 18th century by King Charles of Bourbon who wanted his capital city to have a state-of-the-art theatre. A large and luxurious space with majestic architecture and perfect acoustics, it became known far and wide. Sadly, it was destroyed in a fire in 1816 but was rebuilt under the direction of architect Antonio Niccolini, who created the opulent building which stands on the site today. The San Carlo Opera House is among the oldest continuously active public opera houses in the world and puts together a dazzling season of opera, ballet and performances each year. If you feel like getting dressed up and experiencing the magic and luxury of a show at the theatre, or merely tour the stunning building, just find a holiday rental in Naples and stop by!

The season runs from September to June with performances in concert, ballet and opera and ends, like in Munich or Zurich, with a festival in July, the San Carlo Opera Festival. In the coming months, San Carlo will be home to a rich selection of shows. For example, this month, conductor Fabio Luisi will lead Mahler's second symphony. The famous duo pianists, sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque, will be perfoming Poulenc's concerto for two pianos in January. In June of next year violin lovers can expect to be delighted to by Gil Shaham perform a recital of Tchaikovsky's works and San Carlo will also play host to the great voice of Daniela Barcellona in March of next year.

For the opera lovers, there are some twelve works to be staged. These include very popular and iconic titles like “Aida”, “Carmen”, “Falstaff”, “Don Pasquale” and “La Traviata” alongside rarer performances of the likes of “Goyescas” by Granados and “Zenobia in Palmira" by Paisiello, the Neapolitan composer par excellence. The season finale festival will include some of the best voices on earth; Amarilli Nizza, Stefano La Colla and Nino Surguladze will come together for Verdi's masterpiece, “Aida” and “Madama Butterfly” will be sung alternately by Svetla Vassileva and Serena Farnocchia. Ballet will also be very well represented in Naples with “Romeo and Juliet” according to the classical choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky and “Coppélia” by Roland Petit.
