So Much To See And Do In Potenza, Basilicata

Piazza Duomo, Potenza
Basilicata, one of the lesser-known regions of Italy, is less densely populated than much of the country and is both rich in history and has unpolluted natural scenery all around. The city of Potenza is its capital and is the highest regional capital in Italy. Perched up high, it has beautiful views sweeping over the lush Basento Valley. This could be the perfect tranquil spot for your next escape to a italian luxury villa. The city's origins go back to the 9th century B.C. and, as a result, it is steeped in history and things to see and do. One of the most impressive sights is the Duomo, or Cathedral, of San Gerardo.
Old Image of Potenza
Finished in 1100, extended in 1250 and renovated in the Neo-classical style between 1783 and 1799, may have older roots as inscriptions discovered suggest. Originally it was built in the Gothic style and was dedicated to the Holy Virgin of the Assumption. It was later rededicated to Saint Gerard of Potenza, patron saint and a bishop of the city. San Gerardo was originally from a noble family and came upon the city while travelling. While there he decided to devote his life to the faith and quickly became a beloved and respected member of the clergy, becoming bishop shortly after his arrival.

His relics remain in the church which was dedicated to him after his death in 1118. He was also made a saint just a year after he passed. The stunning 12th century rose window still remains and deserves a visit.

For the more adventurous, Potenza is also known for an attraction called “The Flight of the Angel”. Not for the faint of heart, it takes those brave enough to ride it on a 1550m journey from the peaks of Castelmezzano, across to the village of Pietrapertosa on a mountain peak opposite by zip-line. Riders are placed into a harness facing forward, giving the feeling of flying.

Other highlights of the town include The Archaeological Museum of Basilicata in Potenza. Located north of the city centre, it exhibits archaeological finds from the prehistoric to Roman periods. The centre, itself, has much to offer the tourist. As it is positioned in the upper part of Potenza, one must take an escalator to get to it and the trip to this historic part of the town is a treat with stunning views to be taken in. Once you get there, enjoy the restaurants serving rustic local cuisine and little shops selling local wares.

These are just a few of the many, many things to do in this little city in Basilicata so be sure to pay a visit!
