Arabic and Greek influences can be seen in the towns along the northern coast of Salento, but travelling further inland you’ll find plenty of the more classically designed Baroque towns like Lecce and Galatina.
In the summer months especially, you’ll never be too far from a lively festival in Salento! Many of these events include the traditional ‘Pizzica’ dance. This is a fast rhythmic dance which moves to the sound of a tambourine, accordion and a violin.
Legend tells the strange tale that this dance was designed to rid a poison of a spider’s bite from a person! Its origin actually comes from the Greek influence here and was created for therapeutic reasons.

The capital of Salento is Lecce which has a magnificent castle and bustling markets which are held on Mondays and Fridays in Piazza san Oronzo. Also worth a visit is the steeply situated town of Oria with its striking gothic castle.
