Gargano is a sub-region of the province of Foggia in Apulia in Italy. It is probably most well-known for its National Park and natural beauty. Like most of the south of Italy, it is comprised of rocky cliffs and azure seas but is especially lush due to the fact that the peninsula is partially covered by forestry.
This is made up of the remains of an ancient forest of beeches and oaks (the “Foresta Umbra” that was once part of the forestry which covered most of central Europe) as well as the Apennine deciduous montane forest.

Sunsets are particularly spectacular in this corner of the world with the pink skies set against the sea which softens from rich to powder blue as the light fails. All of this was momentarily threatened by urbanisation until the foundation of the National Park in 1991, preserving the beauty of the area
The park is comprised of the forests, the marine reserve of the Tremiti Islands and the lakes of Lesina and Varano. Nature trails abound, giving visitors ample opportunities to experience the flora, fauna and vistas of the area. If you happen to be looking for something different than your regular hikes, you can also take night-time hikes in the forest.

It is necessary to be led by trained personnel but you'll still have a very intimate experience, being immersed completely in the sounds and scents of nature.
If you still haven't had enough of the outdoors, the islands of San Nicola, San Domino and Capraia constitute the Marine Reserve, where divers are sure to have an amazing experience. The underwater landscape here is astounding, made up of caves, gorges, and sea fans.
For those more interested in what's going on above the waves, there is no shortage of beautiful beaches in the area.
Mattinata beach, called “Gargano’s white butterfly” (due to the appearance of the formation of surrounding white houses in the hills) and “Land of Almonds”, is famous for its hilltop location and enormous sandy beach covered with swathes of centuries-old olive groves and almond trees. Nearby Baia delle Zagare is a local favourite and is known for its famous stacks a few metres from the shore. Boat hires and tours are also available all along the coastline and offer another perspective of the stunning scenery.
Find yourself a luxury villa in Apulia and experience the spectacular natural beauty of Gargano for yourself. Plus, the Apulia area has so much more to see and do in addition to this.
