The walls and streets of Milan are home to the work of many famous and unknown Italian and International street artists. You need only know where to look in order to explore the biggest art gallery in the world. Even then, surprises will often await you around corners and hidden almost out of sight. One of the greatest pleasures that the city has to offer is the experience of leisurely strolling her streets while always having something to look at.
Streets of Milan
It is a wonderful tourist sight that can be experienced for free and without lining up for hours or dealing with massive crowds of people. Best of all, it's a unique experience to share with others once you return home.

You can also do a guided tour, as we discussed in our last article but this isn't necessary in order to appreciate or enjoy the works, merely a bonus if you are really interested.

So, just find a vacation rental in Milan and start exploring!
Street art in Milan
The Legendary Italian street artist Blu has also painted several pieces on the streets of Milan. One is located in Via Conchetta and a collaboration with his friend Ericailcane can be found on Via Predil. Blu is one of the most recognized artists worldwide so it should be a priority to spot one of his works while exploring the street art of Milan. On Via Procaccini, you can find another amazing collaborative piece which is a recently completed mural of South African president Nelson Mandela, who passed away in the last couple of years, by Pao, Nais, Orticanoodles and Ivan.

Porta Ticinese is another of the best areas to go for street art. It’s already got lots going for it with the lovely park in Piazza Vetra and lots of cool and alternative boutiques. Next to the church of San Lorenzo is a piece which was recently commissioned by the church itself and depicts two millennia of Milan’s history in a grand mural along the 40m wall.

Included in the mural is Alessandro Manzoni, Leonardo da Vinci inventing the spray can by Mr Blob, the war between Sforza and Visconti, Napoleon on his legendary white horse and Giuseppe Verdi, the composer. As you continue through Porta Ticinese you'll see shop shutters covered in poems, urban art made with recycled materials, ironic posters and large-scale pieces similar to those around Leoncavallo.

In Porta Romana, you'll be able to see a lot of works which were commissioned for the area. This includes the grand Wallart project which involved some of Milan’s most famous street artists in celebrating the 140th anniversary of the orthopaedic hospital, Gaetano Pini. While these works may lack some of the authenticity of the uncommissioned and sometimes illegal works of street art in other areas they are still impressive works of art in their own right and worth viewing.

Street art is something that any visitor to Milan should appreciate either on their own or through a guided tour!
