Marmore Falls is a man-made waterfall in Umbria which was created by the ancient Romans in 271 BC. One of the tallest waterfalls in Europe and the tallest man-made waterfall in the world, it was constructed in order to divert the stagnant waters of the Velino river away from Rieti because it fed a surrounding wetland and was causing illness.

Today we recognise that the illness in question was probably malaria. The river was diverted to a natural cliff at Marmore nearby and then fell over the edge into the river Nera below.

This, too caused its problems, leading to flooding of the city of Terni during periods of heavy rain when the waters added to that of the Nera. During the Roman era, no solution was derived and it would take centuries for the problem to be fixed.

In the nineteenth century, a hydroelectric plant was established in the area which utilised the water to generate electricity and the flow of the river over the falls is now scheduled to provide the water necessary for the plant, control the flow and entertain tourists. Just seeing the water gush powerfully over the cliff is a fascinating experience but other facilities that make use of the waters have been set up in the area such as rafting.

Hikes and walks are available in the area and are recommended for taking in the beauty of the falls, river and nature surrounding.
