Christmas lights in Rome
Adding to our last post on Rome at Christmas, which covered when sights, stores and restaurants will be open over the festive season, this article will discuss the special events taking place in that great city over the holidays. The holiday season in Italy begins on the 8th of December and continues through to the 6th of January so, even if you aren't going to be in the city on Christmas itself, you'll still be able to enjoy the lights and festive atmosphere. If you are spending a couple weeks or more in Rome, however, you'll get to enjoy the full festive experience. Just find yourself a holiday rental in Rome and start jotting down your ideas for all the things you want to see and do this Christmas!
Piazza Navona
If you're looking to take in the lights then head to the centre of the city, where they are at their most highly concentrated, and wander from Via Veneto to Via del Corso. Piazza Navona, in particular, is especially pretty and is decked out with lots of lights, a carousel and plenty of tasty treats for you or any little ones in the group.

If you're after a bird's-eye view, then make your way to Gianicolo Hill, where you'll be able to experience a panoramic view across the city, all lit up for Christmas! For the religious, in particular, Rome is the place to be this time of year.
St Peter's Square
You can head over to the Vatican and visit St Peter's Square at noon on Christmas Day to hear the Pope's Urbi et Orbi speech and there are countless churches all over the city with elaborate nativity scenes – some of them are even “live” nativity scenes!

Christmas markets are also a highlight of the festive season in Rome. One of the best is in Piazza Navona which is packed full of different stalls selling food, sweets and gifts and souvenirs from the 1st of December to January 6th. There is a very family-friendly environment.

At the centre of the square you'll find another Nativity scene to admire, as well as the afore-mentioned carousel, so there's plenty to keep the kids happy as you take in the traditional market and all of the wares on sale.

As you can see, there's no shortage of things to do and see in Rome at Christmas between the regular sights and attractions and the special festive events. All you have to do now is hope that Santa remembers you aren't at home!
