One of the scariest places in Italy has to be Poveglia Island, part off the 118 island lagoon upon which Venice city is built. It was used as a mass quarantine and burial site during the plague before a mental hospital was built there in 1922.

Gruesome stories of doctors performing horrific experiments on the patients all contributed to the belief that Poveglia was an evil haunted place!

Tourists cannot visit the island but there are boat tours available that sail by it that can describe more of the scary happenings that supposedly occurred here.
