Monastery of San Fruttuoso
Come to San Fruttuoso, a magical part of Liguria’s coastline! Tourists can access San Fruttuoso only by boat or by foot which only adds to the enchantment of this place and its two famous attractions.

One is a beautifully preserved Benedictine monastery, a stone building with a tower topped off with a small dome.

Book a villa in Liguria to easily explore all the coastal treasures along this scenic region!

Over time a beach formed here in front of the monastery but originally boatmen carrying goods to the monastery could row right under the basement arches supporting the building and deliver them right to the cellars. The local tourist office can supply visitors with the prices and opening hours of the monastery and nearby watchtower here and supply more details on a famous underwater attraction in San Fruttuoso just off the shore!
Cristo degli Abissi
The ‘Cristo degli Abissi’ which translates as the ‘Christ of the Abyss’ is a spectacular bronze statue that lies 15 metres under the water’s surface just off the coast here.

A replica can be seen in the church adjacent to the monastery. It stands on the seabed because the boat upon which it was being transported to San Fruttuoso actually sank just before reaching its destination!

When the weather is good and the water is calm, tourists can sail out to the statue’s site in a glass bottomed boat and gaze upon the statue of Christ with his arms stretched up towards the sun.

Scuba diving schools are available around San Fruttuoso where lessons can be taken before diving out to this unique sight and getting up close to the life size bronze statue.

While you’re exploring this stunning part of Italy’s coastline, why not visit the UNESCO awarded Cinque Terre , a group of colourful towns hugging Liguria’s coast which can only be visited by foot or by boat!

Or enjoy a few hours of sunbathing or diving into some thrilling water sports along the Blue Flag beaches here?

There’s so much to do and see around San Fruttuoso in Liguria that you could easily experience a week of cultural and scenic attractions here so why not choose it as your next Italian vacation destination!
