In the picturesque region of Emilia Romagna, just south of the Po Valley, is the ancient city of Modena! Nicknamed ‘The Capital of Engine’ many sports car manufacturers are based here and has made up a large part of the economy here. Visitors have a fine selection of great value vacation villas in Emilia Romagna to choose from that are in easy reach of Modena.

Modena is home to many wonderful opera houses that are well worth attending if you’re passing through here. In fact, the famous Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti comes from here! The senior exorcist of the Vatican, Gabriele Amorth also comes from here.

You can look across wonderful views of the Apennines Mountains that lie ten kilometres south of Modena.

Visit the majestic Ducal palace that boasts of splendid decor and houses a grand library and military museum. It has a beautiful Baroque style facade on the outside and an ornate frescoed ceiling on the inside.

Head back into the centre to gaze as the magnificent Cathedral of Modena which has been awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site status for its rich historical value. Construction of it first began back in 1099 and took almost ninety years to complete as it was fully finished in 1184.

The Piazza Grande is part of this prestigious site and is enveloped by lots of pretty buildings and sights of interest, including the town hall.

Be sure to take a stroll around the museum palaces that displays many stunning works of art that date from medieval, Renaissance and right up to modern times. Art appreciators will truly lose themselves in this archive of beauty, and those with an interest in history can enjoy strolling around the archaeology section of the building.

All this touring is sure to build up an appetite so why not sit down to a traditional lunch of polenta, flavoured lentils and beans and a few generous slices of ‘Cotechino Modena’ This is a pungent salami made from tougher cuts of meat that have been slowly cooked with lots of seasoning, minced and then left to cure for several months.

For those who like to be adventurous in trying new things, why not order local specialities like Cappello da Prete or Ciccioli which are pig’s trotters, and pig’s head served cold! You would need to have a strong stomach to take this challenge on!
