You cannot help but be captivated by the impressive sight of Milan’s gothic style cathedral! It’s one of Europe’s most famous buildings and is the second largest cathedral in the world after Seville Cathedral in Andalusia in Spain.

Stay in a beautiful vacation rental in Milan where you can look forward to a few days of fascinating exploration!

Milan’s cathedral was constructed on a very central site in the city, dating back to when this area was once the foundations of the ancient Roman city called Mediolanum. In the 5th century a basilica was first built here but it was destroyed by a devastating fire.

Later in 1386 an elaborate design for a duomo was planned by the order of Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo for this site.

In the 1880s the cathedral of Milan was nearing completion and demonstrated a strong gothic style of architecture with many pointed windows, spires and stone carvings. The tallest spire was topped off with a polychrome statue of the Virgin Mary to whom the Duomo is dedicated.

But in fact there are still some blocks around Milan cathedral’s façade that are waiting to be eventually carved into religious statues!

The duomo can comfortably host around 40,000 people and tourists can even climb the many steps up to its roof to see its spires and elaborate design in greater detail.
Inside Milan's cathedral
A religious festival takes place here on the Saturday preceding September 14th every year when an iron nail, believed to have been one of the few that nailed Jesus Christ to the cross during his crucifixion is removed from its vault behind the alter for the masses to gaze upon.
