Painting of Pluto
Continuing on from our introductory article on the gods of ancient Rome, here are some more familiar faces that you may already know a little about!

Pluto was god of the underworld and another brother of Jupiter’s. He was a gloomy fellow, jealous of his siblings who had a better life of it high up in the clouds!

Mars was a son of Jupiter and god of war. He wasn’t that popular with the other gods as he was extremely vain and quite cruel. The only other deity that liked him was Venus, goddess wife of Vulcan.

Mercury was a son of Jupiter and messenger of the gods. He knew everything about everyone which made him quite powerful; he was a likable and trusted god. Apollo was yet another son of Jupiter’s and god of the sun and music. Minerva was a niece of Neptune and goddess of wisdom.

Vesta was Juno’s sister and goddess of the hearth and home. Mothers prayed to her to look out for their children.

Bacchus was the god of several things; wine, civilisation, calm and law and so was honoured in many social gatherings among the wealthy of Rome.
Pompeii painting of Venus and Mars
Venus was the goddess of beauty and love. Hercules was a demi god as he was the offspring of Jupiter and a mortal woman. He experienced many adventures during his time on earth and became a hero among men.

An interesting read isn’t it? And lucky for tourists, there are still many temples and monuments that have survived to this day that were built in their honour so plenty more discovery to be experienced if you book a fabulous villa in Italy and travel around many of them!
