
The River Tiber in Italy is the third longest river in the country at a length of 406 kilometres! It rises at Mount Fumaiolo in Emilia Romagna in the Apennine Mountains and flows through Umbria and Latium before joining up with the Aniene River and into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The River Tiber flows through Rome, the capital city of Italy which was founded on its shores to serve as an aid in survival and transportation.

Its waters have a yellowish tinge which earned the Tiber the nickname ‘Flavus’ meaning ‘Blond’.
The source of the River Tiber comes from two springs on Mount Fumaiolo located less than ten metres from each other within a forest. They’re called ‘Le Vene’.
A marble monument was placed here by the Italian leader Benito Mussolini in 1930. On it is inscribed, “Qui nasce il fiume sacro ai destini di Roma” meaning, “Here is born the river sacred to the destinies of Rome”.
Two islands sit within the River Tiber. One is called Isola Tiberina in Rome and the other is called Isola Sacra which is near the meeting of the River Tiber with the sea at Ostia. Tiber Island is bridged on both sides. It was the site of the ancient temple of Asclepius and later became a hospital site.
