Hanging on the sheer cliffs overlooking the Stromboli Volcano and the Tyrrhenian Sea is the medieval city of Tropea. It is situated on the southwestern coast of Italy and considered one of the most beautiful cities on Tyrrhenian coastline. The Tropea promontory is surrounded by cliffs and sandy beaches while many of the older palazzi are built from the golden stone of the cliffs or right into the side of them. As a result, Tropea is oftentimes referred to as the prettiest town on the Calabria coastline.

It is recommended that tourists visit Tropea between May and October, but just remember that July and August are the busiest months and the peak tourist months if you prefer not to contend with crowded beaches and streets. There is still a quiet humbleness that exists in Tropea which oftentimes disappears when an area becomes a popular tourist destination as this community has. Fortunately, Tropea has yet to become a target of the larger touring operators in Italy.
The choices of accommodation in the city of Tropea are considered some of the best in the Calabria region.

Additionally, the path to the church is lined with numerous fisherman caves hollowed out of the cliffside. On an interesting side note, there are two unexploded World War II US bombs on display inside the church. A grateful prayer to the Madonna adorns both of them. But for all there is to see and do in Tropea, nothing is more spectacular than watching the sun set directly behind the church and monastery and over the Aeolian Islands on the distant horizon.
